Now if there were a picture of the churches on the island of Crete there would be something wrong with this picture too.

The problem was that the churches in Crete were living like the world.  Rather than standing out from the world because they were followers of Jesus, they were like chameleons, and false teachers were encouraging this.

What the churches needed were leaders who would teach the people the gospel because and people understand the gospel it will lead them to live differently.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.  It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” (Titus 2:11-12)

So Paul writes this letter of Titus, to Titus, to solve the problem by finding elders to lead the churches, and by teaching the churches the gospel, the good news about Jesus that both saves and changes people.
