The Lord’s Prayer (Part 7) – Kingdom Growth

Does anyone know who these kings rule over?  Where their kingdom is? *[King Philippe; King Abudullah II; King Letsie III; King Harald V; King Carl XVI Gustaf]*

Like these 5 men, Jesus is a king.  He rules over God’s kingdom.

God’s kingdom is not a physical country you can find on the map.  God’s kingdom is made up of people who trust in Jesus to save them from their sins and who are seeking to follow Him.

God’s kingdom includes people from every nation and from every period of human history.

But God’s kingdom is not yet complete.  There are still more people to come into it and be ruled over by Jesus.

This is why when we listen to Jesus teach us how to pray, we see that we are to pray about God’s kingdom.

After teaching us to pray that God’s Name would be treated as special.

Jesus says pray like this…

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come…” (Matthew 6:9-10)

When He says pray, “Your kingdom come”, what does Jesus mean?

The first thing we are praying for is that Jesus would save us and rule over us.  We are praying that we would turn from our sins and place our trust in Jesus as Saviour and Lord.

The second thing we are praying for is that Jesus would save and rule over other people.  We are praying that as people we know and don’t know hear the good news of Jesus from us or from others, they would believe in Him.

And finally we are praying that Jesus would return and bring all the people in His Kingdom into the new heaven and new earth where they will live with Him forever.

So when we pray, let’s ask God to save all His people.  Pray Your kingdom come.
