What are some of the different things you can throw?  [Get answers, give examples]

I want to tell you about something else that can be thrown and was thrown and the person who threw it.

The story begins in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a lady called Jenny Geddes who owned a cabbage stall near St Giles Cathedral in the old part of the city.

Now one particular Sunday – 23rd July 1637 – Jenny was at church at the cathedral, and the minister got up and began to lead the service with a new prayer book.  This new prayer book was a lot like the one that the Roman Catholic church used.

Not wanting to go back to the errors of Roman Catholicism, Jenny Geddes stood up and yelled at the minister: “The devil cause you colic in the stomach, false thief!  Dare you speak the Mass in my ear.”

And she said these words, she chucked the stool she was sitting on at the minister head, starting a riot.  (You can see a sculpture of the stool at St Giles Cathedral as a memorial to what she did).

Jenny Geddes is a superhero of the faith because she loved the truth of God’s Word and was willing to fight against error and false teaching.  She was doing what Jude encouraged the church to do when he wrote, “I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.” (Jude 3)

We many not throw stools today, but out of love for the truth of God’s Word and the Lord Jesus, we are called to fight against false teaching like Jenny Geddes did.
