Imagine the situation…

This morning as you sat round the table waiting for your breakfast, you see the plates and bowls and cups on the table – but they are empty.

You’re waiting for the toast or Weetabix or bacon and eggs to come out, but what you don’t know is that there is no food in the kitchen and no money to pop round the shop and buy some.

Your dad gets up and prays… “Father, thank you for what you are going to give us to eat”

It’s a strange situation, but just over 150 years ago – this is what happened!

It happened in an orphanage (a place where children who had lost their parents lived), and loads of children were sitting around the breakfast table looking at empty plates and bowls.

The man who prayed was called George Müller who with his wife and others cared for the children.

After Müller said grace and everyone said “Amen”, there was a knock on the door.

It was the baker. “Mr Muller, I couldn’t sleep last night. Somehow I felt you didn’t have bread for breakfast, and the Lord wanted me to send you some. So I got up at 2 o clock and baked some fresh bread, and have brought it for you and the children.”

George Muller thanked the man and praised God for his care. “Children, we not only have bread but the rare treat of fresh bread.”

No sooner had he said this, when there came a second knock – it was the milkman. His milk cart had broken down in front of the orphanage and he would like to give the children his cans of fresh milk in order to empty his wagon to repair it.

These were incredible answers to prayer. But Müller wasn’t surprises that God answered his prayer because he was someone who believed prayer worked.

He believed that when you pray “Give us today our daily bread”, God would answer that prayer. He believed Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” – was true!

This is one example of many answers to prayer George Müller received. His story is an encouragement to pray and trust that God is willing and able to supply all that His children need.

His story is a story we need to hear, and if we have heard it, be reminded of it.
