Think about the kind of things people might get chosen for (Prime Minister, Represent England at football, or Team GB in the Olympics, represent school in a competition, to stay in the X Factor, win a prize in a competition).

In the story of the Bible we have people who speak different languages in different places divided from one another.  People are still disobeying God and the world is a mixture of good and bad.  But God’s promise to rescue people by sending someone to undo the mess brought into this world by Adam and Eve still stands.

And it begins with one man and his family.

“The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:1-3)

God chooses one man, Abram.  He gives him a command, leave everything you know and go to the place He would show him.  He also makes some wonderful promises.

People – a great nation, enough people to fill a country.

Blessing – one from his family who would save people and bring God’s blessing to all the peoples on earth.

But Abram was a surprising choice.  Sarai, Abram’s wife, was barren which mean that she couldn’t have children.  So how on earth would a great big family come from Abram?  How would this Saviour of the world come from Abram?

Would Abram believe God’s promises and do what God asked him to do?  Will God keep His promises?
