The Lord’s Prayer (Part 8) – Doing God’s Will

What is heaven like?

The Bible describes heaven in lots of different ways.  It is like a city filled with people.  It is like a garden paradise.  It is like a party or a feast full of joy.  It is a word of light where there is no darkness or sin.  It is place of peace.  It is where there will be no pain or suffering or death or tears.

But there’s something else we’re told about heaven that we learn from the prayer Jesus taught His disciples to pray.

We’ve already seen how Jesus teaches us to pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come…” (Matthew 6:9-10)

He wants us to pray that God’s Name would be treated as special and that God would save all His people.

He then goes on to say, pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

This tells us something about heaven.

Heaven is a place where God’s will is being done as the angels and God’s people who have already died, obey Him, and only do what pleases Him.

And Jesus teaches us that we are to pray that people here on earth now will do what the angels and God’s people who have died are doing in heaven.

To pray that we ourselves would obey God.

To pray that other churches would follow His Word.

To pray that people who come to faith in Jesus would do what God says in His Word.

So when we pray, let’s ask God to help His people live in a way that pleases Him by doing what He says.  Pray Your will be done.
