Judges 6

v1-6: When we are lazy and self-indulgent, and stop taking our faith in God seriously, we make ourselves an easy target for the Devil.

v7-10: When sinners cry out to Him, God is ready to forgive and quick to show mercy and is inclined to hear their prayer. This should encourage us to repent. "Our repentance is right and genuine when the sinfulness of sin, as disobedience to God, is what we chiefly mourn."

v11-21: Gideon's question, ‘If the LORD is with us, why has all this happened?’ shows us "that it is sometimes hard, but never impossible, to reconcile adverse circumstances with the presence of God and his favour."

v22-24: The LORD is Peace because He is "our reconciler and so our Saviour"; He creates peace, quieting our hearts when we are anxious; and He sends peace, "that is, rest from the present troubles."

v25-32: Before Gideon was to fight the Midianites, he had to make peace with God by offering sacrifices. "No good is to be expected until sin is forgiven through the great sacrifice." Gideon is also a type of Christ, in that, "he must first save his people from their sins" [by tearing down the Baal altar, and setting up an altar to the Lord] "and then save them from their enemies."

v33-40: "Here we see how sensitive God is to true believers even though they are weak, and how ready he is to condescend to their weaknesses."
