Introduction

This letter “is intended to warn us against deceivers and their deception and to inspire us to have a warm love and a sincere concern for truth.” This truth which we are to hold firmly to, help others become acquainted with, and not depart from “has two special characteristics: It is the truth as it is in Jesus, and it is truth after godliness.”

Jude 1-2

v1: Christians have been called “by the preaching of the Word” to turn away from sin to Christ. Those who are called will be kept, because God “will not forsake the work of his own hands” and will complete this good work He has begun in them. How comforting it is to know that we are being “preserved from the gates of hell and for the glory of heaven.”

v2: “All our strength and encouragement, all our real enjoyment in this life, all our hope of a better one, flow from the mercy, peace, and love of God.” We should pray that these three things “may be multiplied.” This means we should not “content with [the] scraps and small bits of them” that we have, but should desire to “have them in abundance.”
