Joshua 9

v1-13: In hearing about the conquest of Jericho and Ai, some of the kings in the land of Canaan united to fight against Joshua and Israel. But the Gibeonites sought to make peace. "In the same way... the gospel is to some a savour of life unto life, but to others a savour of death unto death. The same sun softens wax but hardens clay."

v14-21: Instead of consulting the Lord, the leaders of Israel relied "on their own reason." They acted in haste when they could have consulted the Lord about what to do. "Many times we have reason to reflect with regret that a particular course of action turned out unfavourably" because we did not inquire of the Lord in His word and prayer.

v22-27: The Gibeonites are saved, but are to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the whole community. This work served the whole community because it furthered "the worship of God" which was a benefit for every Israelite. Any work that encourages and enables God to be worshipped, even the lowliest work, is a great help to every member of a local church.
