Joshua 6
v1-5: God tests our faith, obedience, and patience by giving us commands which to our "human thinking" seem "foolish to obey" and by giving promises "which according to human probability could not possibly be fulfilled." We are also "tested to see whether [we can] patiently bear the scorn of [our] enemies" and can "patiently wait for the salvation of the Lord."
v6-16: The people were to be silent until Joshua gave the order to give a shout. The shout they were to give "was a shout of victory, a triumphant shout"; "a shout of faith" believing "that the walls of Jericho would fall," and "a shout of prayer," that God would remember the promise that He had made. On the last day, we will shout like this in triumph over our corrupt nature, "when we reach the precise sum and extent of our perfection."
v17-27: All who oppose and harden themselves against God will suffer the same destiny as Jericho did. "The God of heaven easily can, and certainly will, break down all the powerful opposition of the church's enemies."
