Joshua 5

v1-9: God shows that He can be trusted to protect His people "by making [Israel] vulnerable in their most dangerous moments." The people showed "in disabling themselves for action just as they were approaching action" that their confidence was in "God's care for their safety."

v10-12: God provided manna for the people "for as long as they needed it and no longer." We have a Father in heaven who is wise and "knows the needs of his children, and he adjusts his gifts to those needs." God's Word and the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper are spiritual manna, "with which God nourishes his people in the wilderness of this world."

v13-15: The commander of the Lord's army "was the Son of God, the eternal Word, who, before he assumed human nature for eternity, frequently appeared in human form." Here He appears to Joshua to encourage him "to carry on boldly and strongly," and to give to Joshua and Israel "the necessary orders to besiege Jericho."
