Joshua 20
v1-6: With these cities of refuge, "God provided not only for [Israel's] comfort at all times but also for their safety in times of danger." The cities of refuge show what we have in Christ now, and will have in heaven, "not only rest to enjoy, but also refuge to keep [us] safe."
v7-9: We can find significance in the names of these cities of refuge "when they are applied to Christ" who is our refuge. "Kedesh means 'holy,' and our refuge is the holy Jesus. Shechem, 'a shoulder,' and the government is on his shoulders. Hebron, 'fellowship,' and believers are called into the fellowship of Christ Jesus our Lord. Bezer, 'a fortification,' for he is a stronghold to all who trust in him. Ramoth, 'high' or 'exalted,' for God has exalted him with his own right hand. Golan may mean 'joy' or 'exultation,' for all believers are justified and glory in him."
Joshua 21
v1-8: "Just as the God of Israel commanded that the Levites should be well provided for, so the Lord Jesus, the King of the Christian church, has ordained forever that those who preach the gospel should live of the gospel." The lots given were where the Levites were to serve, and support for ministers will be provided if God wants them to serve in a particular place.
v9-42: "The Levites were scattered throughout all the tribes and were not allowed to live all together in any one part of the country." This meant they could watch over the souls of all Israel, and bring the Word of God near to them. Churches with their elders who are tasked "to teach people the knowledge of God," and "to go before them in the things of God" fulfil this function today.
v43-45: God promised Abraham that his descendants would be given the land of Canaan as their possession, "and now at last he fulfilled this promise." He has promised us the heavenly Canaan as our possession, and we can be certain that He will keep this promise, as He is "One who cannot lie."
