James 2:18-26

v18-20: Faith without works is useless. Even the demons believe in God. What makes our belief different to demons is that we show our belief in God by loving Him, delighting in Him, and serving Him, which is something “the demons do not and cannot do.” Without works, our faith is “not only devoid of all the activities that are the proofs of spiritual life, but also unable to bring eternal life.”

v21-25: Abraham and Rahab are examples of those whose faith produced works. If we want to enjoy the blessings Abraham enjoyed of “intimacy with God” and being “called and considered” friends of God, we “must be careful to copy his faith,” which was seen in his actions. This faith was also seen in the life of Rahab the prostitute and she was saved, in spite of “her former character,” which is still remembered, “not so much to her dishonour as to glorify the rich grace and mercy of God.”

v26: “Even the most plausible profession of faith, without works, is dead... Faith is the root, good works are the fruits, and we must make sure that we have both.”
