Hebrews 3
v1: We are to have Christ much in our thoughts and “make him the object” of “serious consideration.” Is there anyone in earth or heaven that is more deserving of our consideration than Him? So, “consider what he is in himself, what he is to us, and what he will be to us in the future and forever; consider him, fix your thoughts on him with the greatest attention.”
v2-4: “Christ is the builder of all things, for he is God, and no one less than God could build the church.” The same power that was needed to make the world “out of nothing” was needed to make the church “out of materials [sinners] altogether unfit for such a building.”
v5-6: How do we show that we are part of the church which Christ is building and is master of? By walking “closely, consistently, courageously, and constantly in the faith and practice of the Gospel,” so that when our Master comes, He “may acknowledge and approve” us.
v7-11: When you hear the call of Christ, what are you to do? You are “listen to his voice; agree with, approve of... apply it.” You must “set about doing what he tells you to this very day, for tomorrow may be too late.” You are not to harden your heart or turn a deaf ear “when he tells you about the evil of sin, the excellence of holiness, the necessity of receiving him by faith as your Saviour.”
v12-14: “An evil heart of unbelief is at the root of all our sinful departures from God,” because “once we allow ourselves to distrust God, we may soon desert him.” For this reason, “it should... be the great concern of each one of us to encourage ourselves and others to watch out for sin,” because “if Christians do not encourage one another daily, they will be in danger of being hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”
v15-19: “Unbelief - with rebellion as its consequence - is the great condemning sin of the world,” especially in those who have had the mind and will of God revealed to them by hearing His Word. Pay attention to His Word.
