Galatians 5:16-21

v16-18: In every believer there is a struggle between the flesh and the Spirit.  The flesh, which is "the corrupt and sinful part of us" resists everything spiritual, whereas the Spirit, who "condescends to live in the hearts of those whom he has renewed and sanctified, to guide and assist them" opposes the sinful desires of our old nature.  We are called to live by Spirit by committing ourselves "to the guidance of the word, in which the Holy Spirit reveals the will of God for us, and to act dutifully in dependence on his aids and influence."  If you live this way, it will be clear that you are not under the law's "condemning power, though you are still under its commanding power."

v19-21: There are many works of the flesh, which we are to put to death.  "Most of them are condemned by the light of nature itself, and all of them by the light of Scripture."  They are sins against God, against our neighbour, and against ourselves, and "these are sins that will undoubtedly shut people out of heaven." Praise God that in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God, we have been washed and sanctified and justified.
