Deuteronomy 6

v1-3: Moses was to teach the people, "everything that God had commanded him to teach, no more and no less." The same is true for pastors and elders today. They are to teach Christ's church everything He has commanded.

v4-16: Because "God is the one and only living and true God," we must "have no other god in our lives or want to have any other." We are to love Him "above anything else" that our desire would be towards Him, our delight be in Him, and our dependence be on Him.

v17-25: “It is good for children to ask at an early age about” what God’s Word means and about what happens when the church gathers. When they ask about the things of the Lord, “it is a sign that they are concerned about them,” and is also a good way for them to become “better informed.”

Deuteronomy 7

v1-11: Moses gives to the people "a very strict warning... against all friendship and fellowship with idols and idolaters." The people of Israel are to take care that they do not mix with "the people of these detestable nations" so they don't become defiled. "This shows us how we must deal with the sinful desires that war against our souls." Sin won't have dominion over us, unless we let it. Let us resolve then with the Spirit’s help, to put sin to death in our lives.

v12-24: God will drive out the Canaanites "little by little, not all at once." We must not think that sin and corruption will be driven out of our hearts, after we have been saved by Christ, immediately. No, it is little by little. "The work of sanctification... is gradual," but in the end it "will be brought to complete victory.”

v25-26: "The warning against idolatry" and "the warning against fellowship with those who practice idolatry" is repeated. One reason why, is so we don't become snared by them, that is, "so that you are not drawn, without being aware of it, to like them and enjoy them, so that you will not value them and become trapped by them." Another reason is because "those who make idols [and/or worship them] are said to be like them, stupid and without sense, detestable and set apart to be destroyed." We are "not to indulge in [sin] or give it the merest trace of support, but to hate it and fight against it.”
