Introduction

Colossians was written "to warn the readers of the danger of the Jewish zealots, who have been urging the necessity of observing the ceremonial law" and "to strengthen them against the mixing of Gentile philosophy" with their Christian faith.

Colossians 1:1-8

v1-2: "Faithfulness runs through every characteristic and relationship of the Christian life." We are to be faithful both in our relationship to God and in our relationships with those He has saved and made His children.

v3: A Christian's faith in Jesus and faithfulness to Him is something we can always give thanks to God for.

v4-5: "Faith, hope, and love are the three principal graces in the Christian life."  Our faith is to be in Jesus Christ, trusting our souls to Him.  We must love all the saints, showing them kindness "despite any minor differences and many real weaknesses." We are given much in this world, but our hope is that what is stored up for us in heaven is very much more.

v6: "All who hear the word of the Gospel should bear the fruit of the Gospel, that is, be obedient to it and have their motives and lives formed according to it."  Is the gospel bearing fruit in us?

v7-8: Pastors' love to share news of the faith of people in the church and their progress in their Christian walk.
