3 John 5-8

v5: “Commendation of what is good in us,” by other believers, “is intended not for our pride but for our encouragement to continue in it.” It is good to be able to hear people praise us “without being proud.”

v6: At the time when this letter was written, it was usual “to accompany travelling ministers and Christians on at least part of their way,” because “it is a kind act to guide strangers on their way, and it is a pleasure to travellers to have good company.” Gaius is encouraged to do this in a way that honours God. It is a reminder for us that we “should carry out even the ordinary actions of life and goodwill in a manner worthy of God, as those who intend to serve and glorify him.”

v7: “The gospel should be made available without charge” to unbelievers. While they are outside of Christ, they “cannot be expected to value it,” nor should they be expected to contribute to supporting those who make it known. This is the responsibility of the church.

v8: We can support and assist the spread of the gospel in many ways. “Those who cannot themselves make it known may still receive, accompany, help, and support those who do.” We can “passionately desire, pray for, and contribute to its spreading throughout the world.”
