2 Peter 3:10-13
v10: Do not doubt whether the day of the Lord will come, “even though it now hundreds of years since this letter was written;” it is a certain event. “The time that people think of as the most inappropriate and unexpected, and when they therefore feel most secure, will be the time when the Lord comes again.” When Jesus returns, all of creation - the earth, its inhabitants, and all its works - “must pass through the fire, which will be a consuming fire to all that sin has brought into the world,” though to us who believe, it will only be “a refining fire.” Let us make sure that we are prepared for this day, “so that it may not be a day of vengeance and destruction for us.”
v11-12: “The coming of the day of God is what every Christian must hope for and passionately expect,” because for us it will be the day of our “complete redemption,” and Christ’s “most glorious revelation!” We show that we are looking forward to this day by living “lives of purity and godliness,” because “if human sin has brought the visible heavens and the elements and earth under a curse from which they cannot be freed without being dissolved, how detestable and evil sin is, and how much it should be hated by us.” Also, if by this dissolving, we will become the holy and blameless people God has saved us to be, “how pure and holy we should be, so that we may be prepared for the new heavens and new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
v13: If God has promised something, it is right for us to look for that promise to be kept. Therefore, “look for new heavens and a new earth,” where “only those who are clothed with the righteousness of Christ and sanctified by the Holy Spirit will be admitted to live in,” because God is faithful to what He has promised.
