2 Peter 2:4-6
v4a: God will certainly bring about His righteous judgment upon false teachers. “To prove this assertion, several examples” of Him doing this in the past are given. He judged the angels who sinned, the world in the days of Noah, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
v4b: The angels who sinned were cast into hell awaiting the judgment of the great day. “Those who rebel against the God of heaven will all be sent down to hell... The darkness of misery and torment,” will follow “the darkness of sin.”
v5: “Ungodliness puts people outside of God’s protection, exposing them to complete destruction.” This was true of the old world in the days of Noah. But “in wrath he remembers mercy,” and “if there are only a few righteous,” God will preserve them. Only those who are ‘in Christ’ will be found to be righteous on the coming day of judgment.
v6: Sodom was full of people who committed detestable sins, and God destroyed this city, and its neighbouring ones by fire. “The One who keeps fire and water from harming his people can make either of these destroy his enemies.” All these “examples of God’s taking vengeance,” which Peter gives, “are recorded to warn us” about what “people who lead ungodly lives must... expect if they continue in a course of ungodliness,” and to prevent us from continuing in sin ourselves.
