2 Peter 1:19-21
v19: Paying attention to God’s Word means applying “our minds to understand” and “our hearts to believe the truth” of what it says, “that we may be moulded and fashioned by it.” If we are to pay attention in this way, we “must regard and use Scripture as a light,” revealing how “we come to know the way of life.”
v20: The words of Scripture are “not a person’s own opinion or an explanation from their own mind.” The words of Scripture are “the revelation of the mind and will of God.”
v21: Scripture was written as men God chose to be His instruments, were carried along by the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit who “inspired and dictated to them what they were to deliver of the mind of God.” It was the Holy Spirit who “powerfully stirred and effectively inspired them to speak (and write) what he had put into their mouths.” It was the Holy Spirit who “so wisely and carefully helped and directed them in the communication of what they had received from him that they were effectively protected against the least mistake in expressing what they revealed.” Being fully persuaded that the Scriptures “contain what is truly the mind and will of God” is essential if we are to give our attention to them.
