1 Peter 4:7-11
v7: Reflection on the end of the world and the return of the Lord Jesus “is a powerful incentive to self-control in all worldly matters and to wholeheartedness in religious affairs.”
v8: We are to love one another. This is more than not bearing “hatred toward one another, or even to have ordinary respect for one another.” Loving one another “implies an affection for their persons, a desire for their welfare, and a sincere endeavour to advance it.” Love enables us to forgive and “cover and hide the sins of others rather than emphasise them and make them known.”
v9: Hospitality is to be done cheerfully!
v10: “Whatever gift, ordinary or extraordinary, whatever power, ability, or capacity for doing good has been to us,” we should use it to serve one another.
v11: In everything we do, “we should aim at the glory of God,” and if we are to glorify God, what we do must be offered “to him through the mediation and merits of Jesus Christ.”
