1 Peter 2:11-17
v11-12: As God’s people, our “duty is to keep away from and suppress the first inclination from or rise of sinful desires.” Our “conduct in every aspect, every instance, and every action of [our] lives should be” honourable, that is, “good, lovely, decent, pleasant, and without blame,” because we live among those who do not follow Christ.
v13-16: Our responsibility to the government as citizens is “submission.” This will involve “obedience to their just laws and commands, and submission to legal penalties.” This general rule is binding on all Christians wherever they are found and “whatever the established form of government” is. **These authorities “have been appointed for the good of societies, and where this end is not pursued, the fault is not in their institution but in their practice.”
v17: “Prosper respect is to be given to everyone,” but for the who are united to Christ, we should love them with a “special affection” that comes from “having fellowship with one another, and going to the same home.”
