1 John 2:1-6

v1-2: Although our sins will be forgiven when we confess them to God, we should not take this as an encouragement to keep on sinning. But the reality is that we will still sin. Praise God we have an Advocate in heaven to ensure our “continuous forgiveness.” Jesus Christ, our Advocate pleads His blood and righteousness to the Father “for all our offences against his majesty.” He “is the universal, atoning sacrifice for all who are saved and brought home to God and to his favour and forgiveness.”

v3-4: Those who know God, “see that God is most worthy of the most complete and intense obedience.” Keeping God’s commandments is evidence that we know God.

v5-6: “Love must and will keep the word of God.” When we love God, we will “seek to know what [we] must do” in order to please and serve Him, and when we have found out what His will is, we will, with the help of the Holy Spirit, give our attention to it “in every aspect of our lives.” This is how the love of God is made complete in us.
