The Big Read – Colossians

Powerpoint Pictures: Fish; Fish and Chips; Strawberries; Strawberries and Cream; Apple Crumble; Apple Crumble and Custard; Bacon; Full English Breakfast

There is something wrong with the following pictures.  There is something missing from them.  Yes, these things are pretty good – but really you need something else added to them.

Fish really needs chips added to it.

Strawberries really needs cream added to it.

Crumble really needs custard and lots of it added to it.

Bacon really needs some eggs added it, in fact it needs the rest of a full English.

The letter of Colossians was written to a church where the people there thought that they might be missing out on something.

False teachers were lurking round the church and they were saying that it’s great you’re trusting in Jesus – but that’s not enough!  What you also need is to add a bit of religious ceremonial stuff, some angel worship, and a bit of human tradition.

This worried these Christians.  Were they missing out on something?

When the apostle Paul hears about what’s been going on, he writes this letter which has one big point – Jesus is enough!

“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.” (Colossians 2:9-10)

Everything we need to be saved, to live a life that pleases God, to change so that we are more like Christ, to have a wonderful future in heaven is available to you in Jesus.

“So then,” Paul writes “just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:6-7)

Jesus is enough – so stick with Him!  That’s what this letter of Colossians should encourage us to do.
