The Apostles’ Creed (Part 9) – Born of the Virgin Mary

<aside> 💡 Can you think of some famous mothers who have well known children. Here’s a few I could think of.

Tell me who these people’s mothers are: King Charles III - Queen Elizabeth Prince William - Diana Bart Simpson - Marge Simpson Hearing the names - Dudley, Ron, Harry, Draco - will ring a bell for some of you.

I guess there are more of them in the Bible. Cain and Abel and Seth - Eve Probably the most famous mother of all is Jesus’ - Mary. Not only because of nativity plays - with little girls wanting to play her.

As we continue to work through the Apostles’ Creed we are reminded that Mary is Jesus’ mother.

In this summary of what Christians believe the Bible teaches, we say…

I believe in Jesus Christ, that “He was conceived by the Spirit, born of the virgin Mary.”

This is what the Bible tells us…

“In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary… Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.” (Luke 1:26-27, 31)

Jesus had no human father - but he had an ordinary human mother who gave birth to him.

This is important because it means that as well as being God and sinless, Jesus is also human.

Right from the verse beginning - after Adam and Eve sinned - God made it clear that the Saviour would be born of a woman.

Because to save us, He needed to be like us.

To live as a perfect human by keeping all God’s laws.

To die as a human and shed his blood to take the punishment for human sin.

For Jesus to be our Saviour - He needed to be:

Human - to represent us by dying in our place.

God - because one human can’t save billions of people.

And sinless - because if he had sinned he would need saving, like we do.

Because Jesus was conceived by the Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, we can be sure that He is our Savior.
